Health Care FAQs

Vaccinations

Adirondack Camp requires that all campers and staff be current for vaccinations.

What if my child needs medication at camp?

Adirondack Camp partners with a pharmacy called CampMeds. Specialized packaging of all medications allows your camper to focus on the fun parts of camp while the Health Center staff focus on their medication details. CampMeds packages ALL medication to be distributed at camp. If your child takes a prescription medication or an over-the-counter medication (either daily or as needed), these MUST be filled by CampMeds. There are very few exceptions (see listed below). You MUST attempt to fill these medications through CampMeds and if informed by CampMeds that the prescription cannot be filled please forward that email to us immediately.

If you are an international family that will be joining us at camp, please register for CampMeds for over-the-counter medications to be administered. However, if your child will require any prescription medication then please bring it with you in its original packaging with directions on how to administer it.

How does my child get their medication?

All medication will be dispensed from the Health Center staff in pre-packaged and labeled medication packets. Medications are administered at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and bedtime so please make sure the medications are labeled with the correct time of day that they are given when sending it into CampMeds. If your camper is on a daily or overnight trip, the medication will be sent with them and administered via the trip’s staffThe only medications that a camper can keep with them are rescue inhalers and topical creams (if used after showering).

What medications need to go through CampMeds?

ALL medication must go through CampMeds including everyday and as needed over-the-counter medications. CampMeds CAN fill pills, tablets, chewables, liquid, cream/ointment, inhalers, aerosol solutions for nebulizers, nasal sprays, eye drops, and ear drops. CampMeds CANNOT fill refrigerated medications, Injections, or EpiPens. We have EpiPens in the health center, dining hall, and the main office which are all in central locations. Additionally, all out of camp trips carry EpiPens. Due to this, we strongly recommend that you DO NOT bring your camper’s EpiPen to camp as we do not want them to get misplaced and we would use ours first as they are in central locations.

What if my child uses an over-the-counter medication?

If your child uses a daily or an as needed over-the-counter medication, it must be filled by CampMeds. Please include these on your camper’s “Permission to Administer Form” online as well. Please do not bring common over-the-counter medication just in case you think your child might need them. Our Health Center is stocked with these and include, but are not limited to, pain relievers, antihistamines, eardrops, wound ointments and creams, and antacids. Please refer to our over-the-counter list for an itemized list of specific medications.

Should I pause my child’s medication for the summer?

We do not recommend pausing ADHD/ADD medication while at camp. ADHD medications have the same benefits for your child in the camp community as it does in school. Helping a child focus during activities or diminish impulsive behavior in social situations could help your child succeed at camp. Discontinuing regular medications or going on a “medication vacation” while a child is at camp can put your child at a significant disadvantage. Please discuss with us any changes to your child’s medication routine/regimen for their time at camp.

How do I place a CampMeds order?

To place an order for your camper’s medications through CampMeds, please go to www.campmeds.com. A one-time registration fee for the entire summer will immediately be charged to your credit card upon registration for CampMeds. Fees are per camper, not Rx, and do not include the cost of medicine.

Deadlines: All information (including prescriptions from the doctor’s office) for your camper needs to be received 30 days before your camper’s start date. Anything not completed by the deadline will be charged a late fee. The cut-off date for receiving information is 15 days before your camper’s start date, after which there will be a late fee. If you miss the cutoff date please let camp know immediately so we can get in contact with CampMeds. A late medication will require an override by our camp team.

Prescription Coverage: The CampMeds pharmacy partner, Aurora Long Term Care, accepts most insurance plans except state Medicaid programs. You are responsible for all co-payments, deductibles, and any medications not covered by insurance. For inquiries regarding utilizing your insurance coverage with Aurora Long Term Care Pharmacy, kindly contact their billing department via email.

Medication Charges: After processing the provided insurance information, co-pays, over-the-counter (OTC) medication, and any uncovered medication will be billed to the camper account through our pharmacy partner. The charges will be reflected on your credit card statement from Aurora Long Term Care Pharmacy. Medication expenses are only incurred upon your camper’s arrival at camp.

How do we communicate with you?

There are several ways to connect with us at the Health Center. The easiest is via email, however, we are available to speak with you at any point should you have questions about the health of your child. You can leave us a voicemail and we will return your call. Please feel free to reach out to our Health Care team at any point to ask questions or share any information that would help us care for your child. Email us at or call our main number 518-547-8424.

We do not always let you know if your child has been seen at the Health Center. This is the case for simple concerns, for instance, a stomach ache, mild cold symptoms, or a cut, bump, or bruise that requires minor first aid.

We will call you if your child has:

  • To stay overnight in the Health Center.
  • To leave camp to be seen in a clinic, emergency room, or urgent care.
  • Sustained an injury to the head (even minor).
  • Tested positive for Lice.
  • A tick is found on them.

We will often email if we have questions on medications or treatments.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is required for all campers and staff. All international and domestic campers must be properly insured in the United States and provide proof of insurance. Most domestic families will already have family health insurance in place. Please see two options to purchase health insurance, if needed, below. The benefit of option 1 is that it also covers several travel-related claims for our international families.

  1. International Short-Term Health Insurance is designed for foreign nationals while in the United States and is available for as little as five days and up to 364 days. This insurance provides quality levels of illness and accident expense protection. Coverage for emergencies that may occur during their trip, including illness and injury, emergency medical evacuation, and emergency reunion are included. Other benefits and services offered that may arise during travel include stolen passports, loss of baggage and 24/7 assistance services. Click here for more information

  2. Short Term Medical (STM) will protect your domestic uninsured campers coming to Camp. Domestic Short Term Health Care is not available in the following states: AL, CO, CT, DE, HI, IL, IN, LA, MA, MI, MS, MT, NC, ND, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, SC, SD, TN, TX, VT, WA, WV, & WY.
