At Adirondack Camp, nestled on our beautiful peninsula on Lake George is our dining hall, where we begin each day together as a camp. Central to this daily ritual is the dedicated kitchen crew, led by Head Chef Fernando, and by his side running the ins and outs of all meals is Dining Hall Liason, Steve. These unsung heroes ensure that every camper and staff member experiences not just meals, but moments of togetherness as nearly 300 people dine.

Fernando has been an integral part of the Adirondack Camp family since 2017, bringing his culinary passion and expertise to the kitchen from his homeland Mexico. Alongside him, Steve, with his longstanding commitment to camp, orchestrates the mealtime experience with precision and catchy phrases. You’ll hear the whole Dining Hall repeat after him with the way he says sausage or two salad bars!

Each day, the kitchen crew prepares three delicious meals that fuel the adventures and activities of camp life. From hearty breakfasts to wholesome lunches and comforting dinners, every meal is a testament to their dedication. But it doesn’t stop there—daily cookies for the beloved cookie break and birthday cakes for celebrating milestones add to the camp experience.

The kitchen team ensures there’s always a vegetarian option available at every meal, and they also cater to gluten-free and several other dietary needs and allergies. Lunch and dinners are accompanied by two vibrant salad bars, offering campers additional choices. Some meals even feature extras like canned fruit, special smoothies, or warming soups, enhancing the dining experience.

Meals are served “family-style” where each cabin shares a plate of food. Two cabin waiters are assigned to help with table setting, food distribution, and cleanup. Everyone starts the meal washing their hands before entering and standing with their cabins and then Steve rings the gong to commence the meal. The gong system guides the flow of mealtime. One gong signals Juniors and vegetarians to begin while two and three gongs respectively invite Intermediates and Seniors to join in. Post-meal, a different cabin takes charge of sweeping, contributing to the shared responsibility and upkeep of camp spaces.

Undoubtedly, meal times can be bustling and lively, yet, amidst the controlled chaos, the kitchen crew operates as a well-oiled machine ensuring smooth-running meals where everyone is fed. At camp, the kitchen is not just where meals are prepared—it’s where friendships are nourished and bonds are strengthened. The dedication of Fernando, Steve, and the entire kitchen crew ensures that every camper and staff member feels not just fed, but valued and cared for. Hoorah for kitchen crew!!

Blue/White

Last night we held Blue/White, due to possible rainy conditions tonight we switched our evening activities. It was the first Blue/White of the session so enthusiasm and spirit filled the whole ball field as we prepared for Tug-of-War! We started with the sorting hat ceremony where new campers are assigned their team with the Sorting Hat, a la Harry Potter. Once assigned, teams played separated by their age divisions. The Intermediates and Seniors played with the brand new tug-of-war rope, as last year the original rope snapped! It was a close battle, it all came down to the all-stars round, the tie-breaker. And in the end, Blue came out on top!
