Joe Thorn’s Forest Lake Match Report

“The day all the campers had all been waiting for… A chance to make a comeback against Forest Lake on home soil. After a small downpour in the morning, the heavens opened and blessed us with some sunshine which must have been a good omen. With 4 events on the horizon on home turf, ADK was looking forward to an exciting day on the peninsula. Rock Climbing, Fencing and Tennis set off and did not disappoint. Rock climbing had their speed climbing route set mid-week and was untouched by all those taking part to provide a fair competing environment; however, this made no difference as ADK were able to bring the scores back to 2-2 after a record breaking 9 second climb up the wall!!

A strong fencing program was between Forest Lake and re-taking their lead. After a strong start from ADK, taking the lead 5-1, Forest Lake remained in contention as the scores moved to 15-8, in a first to 30 points event with 6 fencers per team. Nevertheless, ADK continued their hot run of form for the day, taking the event 30-12. The final member of the morning trio was Tennis, a mix between some doubles and singles games and a first to 6 games was the format for the chance to take home the inaugural Battle of the Lands Plaque.

Nonetheless, it proved to be a trip to basketball that settled the event. A dominant defensive performance from ADK proved to be too much for the more physical Forest Lake, forcing them to try to make difficult shots and restricting them to 10 points in a low scoring game, only seeing ADK net 4 more points than their opposition. Tennis finished up after a needed lunch resulting in a clean sweep for ADK on their home soil, and the return of the Battle of the Lands plaque to our shelf in the office. A strong performance and demonstration of sportsmanship from all those who competed and watched all fixtures. We are all extremely excited for the return of the tournament and look forward to next year’s, ‘Battle of the Lands’ event!”

It was a jam-packed day with excitement that carried into the afternoon, featuring an advanced Culinary Fun session where they delighted everyone at camp with deep-fried Oreos for a sweet cookie break! Following dinner, we strolled through Gallery Night on the tennis courts, admiring artwork created by campers over the past few weeks. The highlight of the evening was ADKChella, where 16 diverse acts showcased their talents. It was an incredibly enjoyable night, showcasing the impressive talent here at camp.
